If you’ve ever checked up on your alleged S.O.’s Facebook page only to find that the “In a Relationship” status had been switched to “Single,” you know the feeling is gut-wrenching. But breaking up via a passive-aggressive Facebook update is becoming more and more common.

In fact, a recent poll shows that one out of four newly dumped Facebook users found out about the breakup by seeing it publicly broadcast on Facebook. Ouch!

Facebook dating app AreYouInterested conducted this survey on its Facebook Page, gathering about 1,000 responses in total. The results are telling. Apparently, a lot of us are using this social network to do the “dirty work” of dating, from surreptitious splits to manipulative messaging.

• Almost 25% of respondents found out their own relationship was over by seeing it on Facebook first.
• Around 21% of respondents said they would carry out a Facebook breakup by changing their status to single.
• Nearly 40% of respondents have updated their status on Facebook so the person they’re dating sees they have plans.
• And almost 35% of respondents have used their Facebook status to make someone think they have plans, even if they don’t.

The vast majority of respondents to this survey were guys; just 30% of survey takers were women.

I had a friend once who had never dated before, and he met some girl on online, and they chatted for a bit, and then they decided to “date”, but had still never met, and called eachother boyfriend and girlfriend!

Funny, I always get these friend requests on Facebook from really hot girls, but as soon as I click their profile to see who they are, it’s easy to tell that they’re spammers/not real. Typical. :p

Facebook and Zynga, the company behind games such as Farmville, have buried the hatchet, announcing a five-year strategic relationship and “shared commitment to social gaming”.

The two companies have been at loggerheads over Facebook’s attempt to make its virtual currency, Facebook Credits, the only one players of games made by Zynga and others can use.

Farmville, the hugely popular game where players cultivate their own farm, is free but players can buy virtual currency with real money to boost their plot.

Facebook takes a 30% commission every time its currency is used, leading Zynga – which reportedly makes as much as $100m (£70m) a year from selling virtual items such as barns – to threaten to quit the social networking website.

I’ve never played any of those Facebook games. My wall is constantly being filled with “Janice is training their dog in FarmVille!” or something like that.

At first glance, the feature story appears less critical than the cover makes it out to be. But Fletcher lends a sharp eye to Facebook’s grand vision and enormous growth, and eventually concludes that Facebook is on the path to become “the Web’s sketchy Big Brother, sucking up our identities into a massive Borg brain to slice, dice and categorize for advertisers.”

All Facebook has to do to squelch this contorvesy is to let people have total, 100% control of their privacy settings. And considering that Facebook was running programs that determine who’s going to hook up with you, the concern over them being Big Brother is warranted.
